SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Saratoga Springs Traffic Department has reportedly started installing new signage to reflect the city’s recently reduced speed limit. Authorities ask drivers to be on the lookout for the changes.
In August, the Saratoga Springs City Council approved a proposal to change the city speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph. According to officials, the move came as part of an effort to improve pedestrian and driver safety.
“The lowering of the speed limit makes our city safer and reduces potential fatalities,” Saratoga Springs Public Safety Commissioner Tim Coll told NEWS10 in March, when the city was first exploring the change.
As authorities continue to change speed limit signs across the city, Saratoga Springs police officers will be out issuing warnings to drivers, the department said on Facebook. Police have reportedly seen an increase in both crashes and crash injuries in the past year.
“Our focus is enhancing the safety of those who drive, bike and walk our roadways,” the Saratoga Springs Police Department said. “Please continue to contribute to the safety of our roadways by following the posted speed limits.”
Saratoga Springs is just one of several Capital Region cities to reduce their speed limits. Earlier this year, lowered speed limits went into effect in both the city of Albany and the city of Schenectady.
