TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A home in Troy is one step closer to being deemed the scariest in the nation. The residence advanced to the finals round in Friday’s episode of the HGTV television series, “Scariest House in America.”

Starring stand-up comedian Retta, the show tours various haunted and spooky homes across the United States, with each vying to be declared “the scariest in America” and win a makeover. Friday’s episode brought the competition to the “ghoulish” Great Lakes region, where Retta explored three homes in New York and Michigan.

Retta’s tour of the 1925 Troy home — which the show nicknamed “The Portal of Pushing Spirits” — began in the attic. According to the owners, children have been heard playing in there and a tall, ghostly man with a hat has been seen roaming the floor.

Downstairs, the owners took Retta into a communal area, where a paranormal surveillance device began to suddenly beep, reportedly indicating a spirit in the room. They then made their way into a bedroom that had belonged to an elderly woman named Shirley, the owners said.

Shirley had allegedly been found dead in the basement. The owners theorized that a paranormal being pushed her down the stairs.

The tour concluded in the basement, where three people have reportedly died. The basement also housed a mysterious wooden cage.

In the episode, the Troy house competed with a haunted one-room schoolhouse in Lansing, Michigan and a funeral-home-turned residence in Plattsburgh. But, at the end, “The Portal of Pushing Spirits” reigned victorious and moved on to the “Scariest House in America” finals.

“What an extraordinary honor,” one of the owners said after Retta announced the news.

Now, the home will face off against four other spooky houses across the United States, including locations nicknamed “Dead Kitty Condo” and “Gables Over the Graveyard.” The winner will receive a $150,000 makeover by interior designer Alison Victoria.

The next and final episode of this season’s “Scariest House in America” will premiere on HGTV on October 24 at 9 p.m. Friday’s episode can be watched on the HGTV website or on HBO Max.
