A portion of the northbound Interstate 5 will be closed from this Friday night until the following Monday morning to enable crews to conduct roadwork and concrete slab replacement.

Caltrans said that its I-5 Asset Management Project team will close the north I-5 from the I-8 to the Mission Bay Drive onramp starting Friday, October 24 at 9:00 p.m. through Monday, October 27 at 5:00 a.m.

The work will improve infrastructure and safety and modernize the corridor to meet current and future transportation needs, the state agency said.

“During construction, temporary freeway closures will be required to replace overhead sign structures, replace freeway slabs, and rehabilitate pavement,” Caltrans said in an project overview. “Detours will be in place to reduce impacts on motorists.”

Motorists are advised to take alternate routes, such as SR-163 or the I-805 past the 8 to connect to I-5. Drivers on the 5 traveling past the 163 will be detoured to westbound or eastbound I-8.

The Moore Street onramp to northbound I-5 in Old Town will be closed to limit the amount of traffic detoured to the 8.

The westbound I-8 Taylor Street onramp and the Morena Boulevard offramp will also be closed to allow clear access to the southbound I-5 connector, Caltrans said.

Onramps at Camino del Rio West in the Sport Arena Area and Sea World Drive/Tecolote Road, and Clairemont Drive will also be closed. The northbound I-5 onramp from Mission Bay Drive will be the next open onramp.

Portable changeable message signs will be placed along the routes advising of the closure and suggesting alternate routes. Businesses and residents along the closure route should anticipate construction noise and lighting during the closure.

Bus and trolley service will continue as normal.
