ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)– Happy Tuesday! Meteorologist Matt Mackie says Tuesday will be the nicer day of the week, with a brighter afternoon and temperatures in the mid-60s.

A Shaker High School graduate and Latham native led his team into the World Series. Also, the La Salle Institute is expanding enrollment for fifth grade students. These stories, and more, are in your five things to know, sponsored by the CDTA.

1. Shaker grad Jeff Hoffman closes out Game 7 of ALCS

Latham native and Shaker High School graduate Jeff Hoffman was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014. 11 years later, he’s headed to the World Series with that same organization. Hoffman closed out Game 7 of the ALCS Monday night, striking out the side in the top of the ninth inning to secure the Blue Jays a 4-3 victory against the Seattle Mariners, and punch their ticket to the Fall Classic.

2. Metro-North line expands to Albany, Amtrak’s Lakeshore Limited revived

Rail lines connecting the Capital Region to New York City and Boston, Massachusetts, are relaunching. Not only will the Metro-North Hudson line be expanding from Poughkeepsie to Albany in the spring of 2026, Amtrak is bringing back its Lakeshore Limited line from Albany to Boston on December 1.

3. Incoming Bishop weighs in on St. Clare’s Hospital

The Catholic Diocese of Albany announced its 11th Bishop, Bishop Mark O’Connell, from Boston. He’s stepping in during a time when the Church is dealing with challenges including the closure of St. Clare’s Hospital, which left nearly 1,000 of its former employees without their pensions.

4. Smelly problem persists for neighbors of sewer treatment plant

People who live and work in North Albany and Menands have complained about smelly air for nearly a decade. Now some area residents are questioning the safety of what they’ve been breathing.

5. La Salle Institute expanding to include fifth grade class

La Salle Institute is adding a fifth grade class starting in the 2026-27 school year. The Catholic college-preparatory school previously only served students in grades 6 through 12.
