Celebrate Native American Heritage Month across San Diego County

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — November is Native American Heritage Month and has been federally recognized since 1990.

Here in San Diego County, the region is home to 18 federally recognized tribal reservations including the Kumeyaay, Luiseno, Cahuilla, and Cupeo tribal nations, with the Kumeyaay being the original inhabitants.

The county contains the largest number of tribal governments and reservations in the United States, with many federally recognized tribes like the Barona, Campo and Pala Bands.

Ruth-Ann Thorn, a member of the Luiseno tribe, recommends participating in events taking place this month, exploring Native American cuisine ,as well as reading literature and fashion. Another option is stopping by a cultural or history center.
