ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Attorneys from Pfau Cochran Vertetis Amala PLLC announced on Friday morning that the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany settled for $8 million in a child sexual abuse lawsuit. This was settled on the eve of a jury trial and is one of seven individual lawsuits.
The case was settled on Thursday night, marking the first settlement out of seven. There are currently more than 400 cases against the Diocese that are stayed and pending in federal bankruptcy court.
Many of the alleged victims came forward in 2022 when the New York Child Victims Act made it possible for them to file lawsuits years after the abuse occurred by temporarily lifting the statute of limitations.
“We are hopeful that the Diocese’s decision to settle this case on the eve of trial means that it – and even more importantly, its insurance companies – will step up and do what is right for the hundreds of others who were abused as children in this Diocese and who are still waiting for justice,” said Mallory Allen, a partner at PCVA Law.
NEWS10 has reached out to the Diocese for comment and is waiting to hear back.
