Cox Communications has launched a low-cost streaming television service for its Internet customers in San Diego and three other markets in Southern California.

The cable company announced Thursday the new Cox TV Lite service costing $20 per month. and including 80 channels of primarily entertainment content.

The service uses the free Contour App and does not require a cable box. It includes Food Network, HGTV, Hallmark, A&E, Lifetime, AMC and Discovery Channel, but not news channels and local broadcasters.

The new service comes as cable companies nationwide seek to leverage internet access to prevent customers from “cutting the cord” in search of cheaper viewing. Spectrum, which is merging with Cox, announced a similar service this month.

“Cox TV Lite is our answer to customers seeking affordable, easy access to the channels they love,” said John Hays, senior vice president of residential marketing for Cox, in a statement.

“We’re excited to offer an entertainment solution that fits modern viewing habits and helps customers get more value from their Cox Internet service,” he added.

The service is also available in Orange County, Palos Verdes and Santa Barbara.
