Cyclist, 13, fatally struck by semi in Will County

A 13-year-old bicyclist was fatally struck by a semitruck Monday afternoon in Manhattan, Illinois.

Police and fire officials responded to the intersection of State and East North around 5:35 p.m. and found the boy unresponsive under the truck, Manhattan police said.

The Will County Sheriff’s Police, Will County coroner’s office, Illinois State Police and Manhattan Emergency Services were also called to the scene, officials said.

An investigation is ongoing.

In a note to residents Tuesday morning, Manhattan Mayor Mike Adrieansen expressed his “deepest condolences for the tragic loss.”

Adrieansen noted village officials were taking steps to improve safety on Route 52, including meeting with the lllinois Department of Transportation, adding crosswalks to the downtown area and implementing a dedicated truck enforcement program.

“As a parent, neighbor, and Mayor of this Village, I share in your grief, your anger, and your urgent desire for change, Adrieansen wrote. “No words can ease the pain of losing a child, and no action can undo what has happened. I wish it could.”
