Baker Mayfield has emerged as one of the NFL’s most effective quarterbacks through six games, leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 5-1 record despite significant roster challenges.

His spectacular throw against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday followed an equally impressive scramble two plays earlier, highlighting the improvisational skills that have defined his resurgence this season.

Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky addressed Mayfield’s elevated play during an appearance on ESPN Radio’s “Freddie and Harry” show, pointing to experience as the driving factor behind his current success.

“The snaps matter. He’s played so much football in his life, going back to Texas Tech and Oklahoma, then, you know, having to play early on as a rookie. So, he’s seen everything now. He’s at that point in his career,” Orlovsky said.

The former No. 1 overall pick, previously released by both the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers, is now firmly in the MVP conversation as Tampa Bay continues thriving without several key contributors on both sides of the ball.

Mayfield’s performance against San Francisco underscored his ability to excel under adverse circumstances.

He completed 17 of 23 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns without Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Bucky Irving, Cody Mauch, or Luke Goedeke, while Emeka Egbuka exited mid-game with an injury.

His crucial scrambles complemented the passing attack, marking his second consecutive game with a completion rate above 70 percent.

Through six weeks, Mayfield has accumulated 1,539 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and just one interception while adding 158 rushing yards.

The production represents one of the most impressive turnarounds in recent NFL memory, though maintaining this level over the remaining schedule will determine whether he remains a legitimate MVP contender.
