Arson arrest in Redwood City apartment fire

(KRON) — A suspected arsonist was arrested after an apartment caught fire in Redwood City Saturday.

Firefighters responded to the apartment fire on the 1300 block of Marshall Street in Redwood City at 7:35 a.m. The suspect, 35-year-old Redwood City resident Eliaser Hernandez-Valadez, was arrested after he returned to the scene of the crime, according to the Redwood City Police Department.

“Investigators from the police and fire department learned the fire may have been intentionally set and a suspect was identified,” Redwood City PD said. “Later in the evening of Nov. 1, the suspect returned to the apartment complex.”

All residents were evacuated from the building safely and no one was injured, police said. Three apartment units were damaged and three people were displaced by the fire. The victims are receiving help from the American Red Cross.

Hernandez-Valadez was arrested and later booked into the San Mateo County Jail for arson to an inhabited dwelling, reckless burning and probation violation.
