Driver killed after colliding with box truck in East County

EL CAJON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — The driver of a BMW died Thursday in a crash with a box truck in the El Cajon area, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 3:25 p.m. near the intersection of Broadway and Oro Street, Lt. Joe Crawford with the El Cajon Police Department said in a news release Friday.

When officers arrived on scene, they found the box truck turned over onto its side. Witnesses said the vehicle was also briefly on fire.

The driver of the black BMW, identified as 19-year-old Jesse Hernandez of El Cajon, was trapped inside the driver’s compartment of the heavily damaged vehicle. Hernandez was pulled free and taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, police confirmed.

The two delivery workers inside the box truck suffered minor injuries.

“Excessive speed appears to be a factor with witnesses reporting the BMW was possibly involved in a speed contest with a separate vehicle before colliding with the delivery box truck,” Crawford said.

No arrests have been made at this time.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call 619-579-3311.
