Funeral procession to be held for fallen La Mesa police officer

LA MESA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A funeral procession will take place next week for La Mesa Police Officer Lauren Craven, who was struck and killed Monday by a vehicle on Interstate 8 while aiding a vehicle involved in a crash.

The procession, which is expected to include over 700 vehicles, will be for law enforcement and family only, the La Mesa Police Department said in a news release Friday.

Here is the route of Tuesday’s procession:

  • Depart Snapdragon Stadium around 7:30 a.m.
  • Proceed northbound Interstate 15
  • Proceed eastbound State Route 52
  • Proceed southbound State Route 125
  • Proceed eastbound State Route 94
  • End at eastbound Campo Road to Skyline Church at 11330 Campo Rd.

Authorities warn motorists to expect road closures and major traffic delays throughout Tuesday morning.

State Routes 94 and 125 from Spring Street in La Mesa will be closed during the time.

On Monday, Officer Craven responded to a series of traffic crashes involving five vehicles on I-8 eastbound, when she exited her vehicle and was struck by a Toyota Camry. The collision also killed the driver of the vehicle Craven was helping who was identified as 19-year-old DeVeonte Lavell.

On Thursday, authorities announced the arrest of 38-year-old Antonio Alcantar, who is suspected of driving under the influence in the crash that killed Craven and Lavell.
