SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10)– The man accused of a deadly hit-and-run crash in Schenectady has been indicted by a grand jury. According to the Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office, Conroy Simpson, 30, of Queens, has been indicted on a felony charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
Simpson is accused of leaving the scene of an accident after hitting an 8-year-old child with his car near Chrisler Avenue and Crane Street on March 19. Police said when they arrived, they found the child unresponsive at the scene and rushed him to Ellis Hospital, but the child later died.
According to the child’s family, he was helping the family get items for dinner when he was struck by the car.
Police said the car was found near the Woodlawn area in Schenectady a short time after the accident happened. Simpson was arrested a day later.
He was initially charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
On March 25, Simpson’s lawyer Jasper Mills told NEWS10 he didn’t know what happened until he was contacted by police.
“He gave them his location. He waited for them to show up and once he found out and once he was notified by the police what actually happened it destroyed him,” Mills said.
After his initial court appearance, Simpson pleaded not guilty and was remanded to the Schenectady County Jail with bail set at $500,000. He then posted bond and was released.
Simpson is set to be arraigned on the indictment on November 13 at 10:30 a.m. in the Schenectady County Court.
