Saratoga Co. announces teen lifeguard training sponsorship

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Saratoga County is seeking teens interested in spending the summer in the sun while also protecting and saving lives. The Saratoga County Department of Aging and Youth Services announced on Thursday that several lifeguard training sponsorships are available for eligible residents to take the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training.

Teens between the ages of 15 and 17 can become eligible for the sponsorship after participating in a pre-requisite swim on November 8 at the Saratoga Springs YMCA. The two-hour swim will have participants swim 300 to 500 yards continuously, tread water hands-free, and retrieve a weight while being timed.

Water skill classes are held from November through May as part of the training, and all students will be certified in CPR, first aid, AED, and water rescue skills with the American Red Cross after completing the training. Applications are available online through the county’s website.
