Heat rising already on former Bears coach Matt Eberflus as Cowboys’ defense flounders

Former Bears coach Matt Eberflus is struggling as Cowboys defensive coordinator, and his job security looks shaky already. However, owner Jerry Jones backed him this week in part because he “dealt with adversity” with the Bears and as Colts defensive coordinator before that.

“He’s had his tail kicked,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “That’s who I want in the foxhole with me, because there’s no such thing as having all the answers. … I still feel as strongly as I did the day we brought him here.”

The Cowboys hired Eberflus in January after he went 14-32 coaching the Bears. He also interviewed with the Falcons and was reported to be a candidate for the Bengals in the offseason.

The Cowboys are 2-3-1 and have allowed the most yards in the NFL at 411.7 per game and second-most points at 30.7 per game. The Bears beat them Sept. 21 as they scored a season-high 31 points and quarterback Caleb Williams posted a career-high 142.6 passer rating.

That’s business as usual for Benedet, who was overlooked coming out of the University of British Columbia last year and landed with the Bears as an undrafted rookie.
ABC analyst Troy Aikman called D’Andre Swift’s 55-yard catch-and-run fortunate.
Neither player has ever faced the Bears. They traded Smith to the Ravens in 2022, and Jackson was out the last time they played at Soldier Field.
