Popular British YouTubers Dan Howell and Phil Lester have officially confirmed what fans have speculated for more than a decade — the two creators have been in a romantic relationship since 2009.
In a new video posted to their shared channel, Dan and Phil, the pair addressed the long-running rumors about their relationship status head-on. Howell opened the video by asking, “Alright, let’s get this over with. Are Dan and Phil in a relationship?” Without hesitation, Lester responded, “Yes.”
The two then laughed, with Howell joking, “Alright, bye,” pretending to leave the frame before continuing, “Oh, sorry, you wanted more, did you?”
A Love Story That Began in 2009
Howell and Lester first met in 2009, the same year they began collaborating on content that would make them among the most recognizable faces in YouTube’s early creator era. “We fell into it hard and fast in 2009, and here we are almost 16 years later,” Howell shared.
Lester added humorously, “Stop telling me how long it was. So yeah — relationship, boyfriends.” The duo explained that they never felt the need to label their relationship publicly. “It was so fast that we never labeled it,” Howell said. “We just ended up living together and here we are.”
Coming Out and Continuing Careers
Both creators came out as gay in 2019 through personal YouTube videos, though they chose not to publicly define their relationship at the time. Since then, each pursued solo projects before reuniting professionally.
During their hiatus, Howell released his bestselling mental-health book You Will Get Through This Night and launched a solo comedy tour We’re All Doomed in 2022. Meanwhile, Lester continued building his AmazingPhil channel and other creative ventures.
In 2024, the duo returned with their third joint tour, Terrible Influence, and revived their gaming channel, which had been on break since 2018.
Looking Ahead- Together
Addressing fans’ curiosity about whether their content will now focus on their relationship, Howell and Lester clarified that they have no plans to become “couple vloggers.”
“We’re not suddenly going to be romantic on camera,” Howell said with a laugh. “We’ve had ups and downs like anybody. We’ve lived a thousand lifetimes of a normal person’s partnership.”
The pair closed their video by announcing their next project — The Dan and Phil Podcast — a new creative venture that will allow them to share untold stories from their 15 years together.
“Fifteen years of suppressing all of these stories and opinions, and they’re finally gonna come out,” Lester teased.
After years of silence, Dan and Phil’s revelation marks the start of a new, open chapter — one their fans have been waiting for since 2009.
