The Malott family seems to have a penchant for professional sports.
Jeff Malott, brother of UFC fighter Mike Malott, scored his first NHL goal for the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night in his 15th career game against the Vegas Golden Knights.
The 29-year-old forward has been a career minor-leaguer, playing 298 AHL games since the 2020-21 season. In that span, he had 105 goals and 208 points between the Winnipeg Jets’ affiliate and the Kings’ affiliate.
Earlier this year, Malott followed in his brother’s footsteps by dropping the gloves in his first NHL fight against Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Brandon Carlo, with whom Malott shared a laugh in the penalty box shortly thereafter.
For his part, Carlo did not seem aware that fighting, er, ran in the family.
Signed as a free agent in 2024, Malott spent last season with the Ontario Reign, potting 23 goals and 51 points before making the big club out of training camp this season.
The Burlington, Ont. native signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Cornell University.
The elder Malott, Mike, is 5-1 in the UFC coming off a knockout win over Charles Radtke at UFC 315 in Montreal. He’s scheduled to take on Kevin Holland as the co-main event at UFC Fight Night: de Ridder vs. Allen on Oct. 18.
