Mechanicville man sentenced in unlawful surveillance case

MECHANICVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10)– A Mechanicville man has pleaded guilty and has been sentenced for multiple charges stemming from an ongoing unlawful surveillance investigation. According to police, Gregory Shorter, 47, will face up to seven years in prison.

Shorter was arrested by Mechanicville Police in May 2024 after an investigation into unlawful surveillance. He was accused of unlawfully installing and using electronic recording devices to record another person without their consent.

As investigators continued to look into the complaint, a search warrant was executed at his house, resulting in the seizure of electronic devices and recording equipment, as well as an assault weapon.

Subsequently, Shorter was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, promoting a sexual performance by a child, and unlawful surveillance in the second degree. Officials said Shorter later pleaded guilty to the felony charges.

According to the police department, Shorter was sentenced in Saratoga County Court and received the following sentences:

  • Three years in prison, followed by three years of probation for the weapon charge
  • Two to seven years in prison for the sexual performance by a child charge
  • One to three years in prison for the unlawful surveillance charge

“This investigation required the execution of numerous search warrants, extensive follow-up interviews, and careful handling of sensitive digital evidence,” Chief William Rabbitt said. “I am extremely proud of the diligence and professionalism, our officers demonstrated from the very beginning of this case through its successful prosecution.”
