Mike Vrabel returns to Nashville this Sunday under circumstances few could have anticipated just two years ago.

The New England Patriots head coach spent six seasons with the Tennessee Titans, compiling 56 wins and three playoff appearances before his dismissal following the 2023 campaign.

Vrabel, who experienced that same abrupt ending firsthand, reached out to Brian Callahan after learning of his dismissal.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Sunday’s matchup at Nissan Stadium, Vrabel explained his reasoning behind the message.

“I don’t wanna see anybody that shares a job with [me] get let go,” Vrabel said, adding, “I just remember all those coaches, or people, that reached out after I was let go. I think that that’s important. Because nobody texts when you lose. They all text when you win. So it’s a good reminder.”

The gesture reflects the respect Vrabel has for others who share the profession’s challenges and uncertainties.

Vrabel also earned NFL Coach of the Year honors during his tenure, making his firing after back-to-back losing seasons a difficult end to what had been a successful run.

His successor, Brian Callahan, lasted just 23 games before being let go this week with a 4-19 record.

Former Chargers head coach Mike McCoy now steps in as Tennessee’s interim coach, giving the Patriots a new opponent to prepare for.

Vrabel expects the Titans to take more risks under McCoy, possibly including more trick plays or fourth-down attempts based on his past tendencies.

Still, Vrabel acknowledged that no matter the wrinkles, execution on the field will ultimately decide the outcome between the 4-2 Patriots and the struggling 1-5 Titans.
