Report: Red Sox lose another front office executive to Washington Nationals

Earlier this fall the Red Sox lost one of their top executives when assistant general manager Paul Toboni was hired as the Washington Nationals’ new president of baseball operations.

Now, another key executive is set to follow him.

Devin Pearson, the Red Sox director of amateur scouting, is reportedly set to join the Nationals as an assistant GM. Pearson had been with the Red Sox since 2017 and held a variety of scouting titles, and he most notably oversaw the club’s last three drafts, bringing aboard numerous top prospects including Kyle Teel, Connelly Early and Payton Tolle.

Alex Speier of The Boston Globe was first to report the news.

Pearson’s departure to the Nationals is a tough blow for the Red Sox front office, but also not terribly surprising given his history with Toboni. The two were college teammates for one season with the University of California baseball team, and following his arrival in Boston Pearson reported to Toboni throughout his career, succeeding the new Nationals boss as the club’s director of amateur scouting prior to the 2023 season.

Pearson may not be the last person the Red Sox lose to another organization this offseason.

Speier also reported this week that bench coach Ramon Vazquez is expected to interview for the Minnesota Twins managerial opening. That job opened after the Twins fired Rhode Island native Rocco Baldelli after seven seasons.

MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reported that assistant hitting coach Ben Rosenthal is also expected to leave, but according to WEEI’s Rob Bradford the remainder of Alex Cora’s coaching staff will return.
