Chief of police in Schenectady to retire in early 2026

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Schenectady Police Department Chief Eric Clifford is stepping down from the force in early 2026 and focusing on the next chapter of life, retirement. Clifford has been leading the Schenectady Police Department for the last nine years and will step down in late January 2026.

Clifford told NEWS10 that while his time with law enforcement may be coming to an end, he won’t be leaving the community. Ensuring a smooth transition, Clifford is focusing on the 2026 city budget process.

“Chief Clifford’s advance notice will allow for an orderly transition within the department and ensure that the 2026 budget process proceeds without disruption,” a statement from the Schenectady Police Department said. “Additional information will be released once his official retirement date is confirmed.”

Clifford was first sworn into the Schenectady Police Department as chief on September 13, 2016. Clifford said on October 12 that he had notified Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy of his retirement around October 2.

“I am very active in our local law enforcement community, sitting on many boards and committees,” Clifford said. “Out of respect for them I want to see a proper transition.”
