The Green Bay Packers found a true gem in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden has looked like a star in the past three games, and Jeff Wyman of Pro Football Focus noted his Week 7 performance against the Arizona Cardinals.
“Golden wasn’t as dominant this week as he was last time out, where he compiled an elite 90.0 PFF receiving grade. Still, he managed to convert three of his four receptions into first downs despite an average depth of target of just 3.8 yards,” Wyman wrote.
Golden’s raw numbers of four receptions and 37 yards weren’t as impressive, but that’s not all his fault.
Head coach Matt LaFleur seemed to call an overly conservative game, rarely allowing quarterback Jordan Love to take shots down the field, which is what he does best.
That also has limited Golden’s upside.
He’s a big-play specialist with impressive speed and acceleration, yet they don’t play that type of game.
The Packers went more than two decades without taking a wide receiver in the first round of the NFL Draft.
That they used this year’s pick on Golden speaks volumes about his upside.
Yet, that might also be why they’re taking things somewhat slowly with him.
The Packers don’t necessarily have to rush him, given all the impressive weapons they have on offense.
Now, his next chance to break out will come on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 8.
With Love looking to one-up former Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, he may look toward Golden for some big throws.
