Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello reportedly hired as next SF Giants manager

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The San Francisco Giants have hired University of Tennessee baseball head coach Tony Vitello as manager. Vitello has never worked as a coach in professional baseball.

However, the 47-year-old coach led the University of Tennessee Volunteers to a College World Series championship in 2024. According to ESPN, the Giants and Vitello are in the midst of finalizing a landmark deal that would make him the first ever college coach to become an MLB manager with no prior professional experience.

The University of Tennessee confirmed the hire in a tweet, saying, “It was one heck of a ride. Congratulations to Tony Vitello, making history as the first collegiate head coach to move directly to MLB management.”
