AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — University at Buffalo’s football team is no longer unbeaten in Mid-American Conference games after losing at home against one of the lower-rated teams in the league.
Ta’Quan Roberson threw four interceptions and lead runner Al-Jay Henderson fumbled in Buffalo’s lost turnover battle, 24-16 defeat against Akron on Saturday at UB Stadium.
UB (4-4 overall, 3-1 MAC) had won its past seven meetings with Akron (3-6, 1-3) and was playing its fourth conference game against an opponent with a losing record.
Buffalonian Nik McMillan led the Bulls with 177 yards on eight receptions. Roberson was 23 of 36 passing for 266 yards. Henderson rushed for 67 yards.
Red Murdock led UB’s defense with 13 tackles and a strip sack that tied him with UB great Khalil Mack for the NCAA FBS record with 16 career forced fumbles. Jalen McNair had an interception.
Ben Finley threw two touchdowns and added a rushing score in the second half to lead Akron. With UB leading 10-3 at halftime, Finley found Kyan Mason for a 9-yard touchdown to tie the score, and Conner Cravaack on a 5-yard throw into the end zone to take the lead. Finley’s 38-yard run made it 24-13 for Akron.
UB plays its next two games away from home, at Bowling Green on Saturday and Central Michigan on Nov. 19. The final two games will be at UB Stadium against Miami and Ohio. The Bulls need two more wins to gain bowl eligibility, and at least three victories to remain in contention for the MAC championship.
