SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Women at Union College have a new sport in the spring of 2027. The college plans to introduce a new women’s flag football team for the game that is rapidly growing across the nation.
Added as the 15th women’s program at the college, Union College announced on Wednesday that this marks the first women’s sport to be added since women’s golf was introduced in 2012. Athletic director Jim McLaughlin said it’s exciting to offer another sport.
“It’s a sport that has gained tremendous popularity, and can only help us to attract more outstanding women student-athletes to Union,” he said.
Although 2027 is still a bit far out, the search for the new team’s coach is underway. The roster has 25 spots open, and will play home games on Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
“We are looking for a leader who will uphold our standards of giving women the opportunity to achieve their personal best while competing against other top athletes at colleges throughout the Northeast and across the country,” McLaughlin said.
