ALBANY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — As raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ramp up across the country, so has their documentation. Witnesses recording agents in action have reached the eyes of onlookers.
And the state government is interested.
New York Attorney General Letitia James is urging New Yorkers to submit videos of ICE activity through an online form. The initiative follows Tuesday’s ICE raid on Canal Street in New York City.
In a statement released on October 22, James called it a matter of protecting people’s civil rights and capture illegal procedures.
“Every New Yorker has the right to live without fear or intimidation,” James said. “If you witnessed and documented ICE activity yesterday, I urge you to share that footage with my office. We are committed to reviewing these reports and assessing any violations of law. No one should be subject to unlawful questioning, detention, or intimidation.”
In September, after ICE agents raided a factory in Cayuga County for undocumented immigrant workers, the Auburn Citizen obtained video of the raid, giving people their first look into what goes on during the controversial searches.
“We found their sanctuary,” one officer said in the video. Another predicted the scrutiny the local police would get for assisting the raid.
