It’s only been one game, but Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe has already made quite an impression.

He was on fire on Wednesday night and produced 34 points, seven rebounds, and three assists on five three-pointers made.

Those are the most points in a rookie debut this century.

It feels like the race for Rookie of the Year has started with a bang.

Thanks to Edgecombe, the Sixers were able to sneak by the Boston Celtics, beating them 117-116.

Believe it or not, Edgecombe wasn’t the top scorer for Philadelphia because Tyrese Maxey put up 40 points.

Meanwhile, Joel Embiid could only muster four points and six rebounds during his 20 minutes on the court.

Jaylen Brown and Derrick White put up 25 points each for the Celtics.

The lack of Embiid, as well as Paul George’s absence, isn’t good news for the 76ers, but Edgecombe’s explosive game was cause for serious celebration.

When he was chosen as the third overall pick in the recent draft, most fans weren’t sure how much they’d see of Edgecombe.

As all NBA followers know, many rookies ride the bench for much of their debut season.

But Edgecombe has made a huge splash in his opening night, which means he will certainly get many more minutes in the games ahead.

That is especially true because the team will be seemingly dealing with injuries for some time.

Edgecombe received high marks in college, and his versatility was one of his most exciting features.

That was on display Wednesday night, and now fans are eager to see what he does next.

The 76ers needed good news, and that’s what they got with their rookie star in his first game.
