Westerlo holds ceremony to honor veterans, first responders

WESTERLO, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The town of Westerlo held a closing ceremony for its 2023 Hometown Heroes program on Saturday. The event honored local veterans, first responders and this year’s Honorary Hometown Hero.

As part of the 2023 Hometown Heroes program, 13 local veterans and three Westerlo first responders were honored with individual banners throughout the town. Each of the recipients and their families were formally presented with their banners during Saturday’s ceremony.

The event also included a presentation of Vietnam Medals to two veterans and the recognition of a World War II veteran who recently received a posthumous high school diploma. Additionally, Albany County Executive Dan McCoy was named this year’s Honorary Hometown Hero.

Over the past eight years, the town of Westerlo has honored over 185 hometown heroes with banners. The Hometown Heroes program aims to recognize both veterans and first responders for their bravery and sacrifice for the country and community.
